2016 Boston Bruins Foundation Marathon Team

Dear NYHL Families,

My name is Josh Freeman.  I currently help coach the Newburyport Mite Instructional Hockey Teams, the learn to skate program on Sunday mornings, and the learn to play hockey clinic with Dick Tierney.  I also went all the way through the Newburyport Youth Hockey System when I was young.  Coach Tierney taught my learn to skate class when I was 5 or 6 years old and he, my father, and Brian Dennis alternated as our hockey coaches from first through eighth grade.  Although I ended up going to The Governor’s Academy for high school, I made sure I was at every Newburyport High Hockey game I could attend; whether I was supporting former teammates, friends or family.  I have three younger brothers who also went through the Newburyport Youth Hockey System.  All three played hockey for Newburyport High School and my two youngest brothers, Derek and David, even won a state title with Newburyport High School in 2009.  My youngest brother, Derek, is currently playing Division I Hockey for Colgate University.  We’re your typical Newburyport Hockey Family!

My family, like many others, lived at the Graf Rink – it’s where we grew up!  Our family time was spent at the rink every winter (and most summers) supporting each other and our friends.  I would like to believe that I formed some of my strongest relationships in the NYHL and I am still friends with many of my former teammates and coaches – even 30 years later.  We had great role models and coaches to look up to growing up which is one of the reasons I decided to help coach and teach with the NYHL.  I plan to continue to be involved in the organization as long as I can.  After my youngest brother graduated from high school and we grew older, our family lost that time we used to spend together at the rink.  I am fortunate enough to have a daughter that has become mildly obsessed with the sport.  Riley has given my parents, brothers and sisters a new reason to come back to the rink!  For that I am very grateful to the NYHL.  Without a doubt it has been a fundamental organization in my life.

I recently found out that I have been selected as a member of the 2016 Boston Bruins Foundation Marathon Team.  I am very excited for this opportunity and couldn’t think of a better team to run for!  Blending my love for hockey and commitment to help children into one athletic event was a perfect fit for me.  Although I’ve not run a full marathon before and am certainly nervous about the idea of running 26.2 miles, I am also very excited and honored.  As a member of the Boston Bruins Foundation Marathon Team, I have been given the challenge of raising $5,500.00 to help benefit the Bruins Foundation.  It is a great cause and a admirable goal!  With the support of my friends and family members I have already reached almost 50% of my fundraising goal but I still have a long way to go!  Which is why I am reaching out to you, my NYHL family!  Any donation to the Boston Bruins Foundation that you can offer would be greatly appreciated!  No donation is too small, they all add up to help me reach that $5,500.00 goal!

Thank you so much for your support, consideration and time!  You can make a contribution to The Bruins Foundation by making a donation on my fundraising page: www.crowdrise.com/joshuamfreeman or if it is easier, you can also assist by mailing a check made payable to the Boston Bruins Foundation to my home address: 5 Richardson Path – Newburyport, MA 01950.

Thank you again, I hope to see you all around the rink soon!

-Josh Freeman
